Sewing Course

Basic sewing skills

A five week course held on a Tuesday evening from 7.00 to 9.00 pm.

The classes are held at:

Pottery Corner, 34 Beech Road, Chorlton, Manchester M21 9EL.

This course is for the beginner. By the end of the course you should have learned enough to construct a simple garment e.g. a skirt.

You will learn how to use and control a sewing machine, and how to avoid common problems.

You do not need to bring any equipment or fabric with you, but if you have a machine of your own you can bring it if you wish.

You will receive a folder with notes to refer to later, and pockets to hold the samples that you will make. This way it will be easy for you to look back and remember how to do the operation.

The classes are no larger than five people so there is plenty of individual attention.

The room is warm and comfortable and tea or coffee is provided.

What you will learn:

Threading and unthreading a sewing machine. Winding the bobbin of the machine. Changing the needle. Starting to stitch, avoiding thread tangles. Controlling the machine. Turning corners. Securing a seam. Stitching curves. Accurate seam allowances. Pressing. Undoing you stitching. Finishing the fabric edge. Different sorts of seam. Understanding fabric grain. Choosing pattern pieces from a paper pattern. Understanding pattern markings. Darts. Facings. Gathers. Buttonholes. Inserting a zip. Hemming straight or curved edges.

What you will take home:

Confidence!

Folder of notes and samples.
